  • Surface Protection: moving supplies designed to keep surfaces clean and scratch-free.

Moving supplies such as small bubble roll, packing paper, cushion foam and furniture pads should be used to help prevent surface scratches to your valuables.  During a move items in trasit will shift, vibrate, and rub against other surfaces and can cause damage.  Be sure lightweight items, even those inside moving boxes, are separated by paper, roll, or foam.  For heavier items, such as appliances and furniture, be sure to separate them with furniture pads, or by placing a mattress between them.

To help assure sofas stay smudge and moisture free consider wrapping the entire furnishing with stretch wrap.  It's a lot less costly than a professional cleaning or complete replacement.

Also, consider covering your mattress and box spring with a mattress bag.  These too help keep dirt and moisture off during the moving process.  After your move these large bags can be used as a drop cloth, or to cover items left in storage.
  • Cushioning: supplies that provide a layer of protection around valuables by preventing movement and softening the effect of impact or vibration.

Before packing fragile items into moving boxes make sure each one is thoroughly wrapped and surrounded with a cushioing material such as larger bubble roll, packing paper, foam sheets, or loose-fill.  These moving supplies not only provide surface protection but also absorb shock, and can significantly reduce the likelihood of damage to your valuables from shifting and bouncing while in transit.
  • Void-Fill: fills the empty spaces created when variable-sized items are placed in a moving box. Keeping items from shifting is critical to a successful move.

Packing paper and loose-fill, as well as other moving supplies, can be used as effective void-fill.  Packing paper is probably the most versatile moving supply as it can wrap around items to provide surface protection, or be loosely wadded up to be used for cushioning or void-fill.

However, loose-fill (also called packing peanuts) is the best option as it will fill in and form in empty areas in your moving boxes.  Loose-fill is also very light adding little weight to the moving or shipping box.  It can also be re-used.
